ITINERARY WITH FREE ENTRANCE TICKETS

This tour offers the possibility to enter the free monuments of Ravenna, combining the visit of some of the most relevant Early-Christian and Theodorician monuments – with their beautiful mosaic decorations – and the possibility to pay homage to Dante Alighieri, the finest Italian poet who died here in September 1321. The tour includes the Arian Baptistery, Dante’s Tomb and the Church of St. Francesco. This last one is famous for the magical atmosphere of its crypt, covered with floor mosaics and constantly flooded by water, due to the geo-morphological phenomenon of subsidence. The tour ends with the magnificent Basilica* of Sant’Apollinare in Classe.
*(The Basilica is a few kilometers from the city and can be reached only by bus)

This itinerary will take you to the discovery of the most famous and interesting monuments of the town: universally known for the splendour of its mosaics, our monuments make Ravenna a special place, unique in the world.
A fascinating journey through time where you can admire the best preserved Italian works of art dating back to the early Christian and Byzantine Era.
The BASILICA OF S. VITALE, the highest expression of early Christian art and architecture; the MAUSOLEUM OF GALLA PLACIDIA, a kind of “magic casket” which contains in its small perfect structure the V century mosaics, considered the most beautiful in the world; the BASILICA OF SANT’APOLLINARE NUOVO, built by the King Theodoric for the Arian cult as a Palatine Chapel, which preserves the largest wall mosaics that have survived from ancient times.
You will stroll along the historical streets to get to the nice Venetian Piazza del Popolo, you will follow in the footsteps of Dante to discover areas where the poet lived after his exile from Florence.

MOSAIC DEMONSTRATION – GUIDED VISIT TO THE KOKO MOSAIC STUDIO FOR STUDENTS AND GROUPS
Surrounded by Ravenna’s rich cultural heritage, Koko Mosaico continues to explore the language of mosaic yet never loses sight of past traditions.
The studio is like an atelier from times past where one can buy and/or commission mosaics.
Koko Mosaico offers guided visits to the contemporary mosaic studio, including a demonstration of mosaic technique.
Have you ever wondered how a mosaic is made?
What material is it made of?
How do you cut the mosaic tesserae?
What’s the difference between ancient mosaics and contemporary mosaics?
The staff at Koko Mosaico will explain the ancient craft of mosaic, and show you exactly how one is made.
You will help cut the marble into little pieces (tesserae) using the traditional tools called hardie and hammer.
All the steps necessary to complete a mosaic artwork will be demonstrated, and you are invited to give free rein to your curiosity and ask us all the questions you like.
Our studio can accommodate up to 30 people at a time.
Minimum of 10 people, and maximum of 20
Cost: 5,00 €/person. Teachers, people with disabilities and those that accompany them, do not pay.
Duration: the demonstration takes about 20/30 minutes, depending on the number of questions.
LaRa – RAVENNANTICA WORKSHOPS
These workshops are organised inside the Museum Tamo of Ravenna, which is the Museum dedicated to the mosaic art.
Workshops , especially dedicated to children and students, are hosted in two big rooms completely equiped to accomodate people, also more than one student’s class and to realize interesting workshops.
These workshops try to develop and stimulate the autonomy and critical sense in children working on the active involvement and the stimulation of their creativity.
Educators use a specific language but, in the meanwhile, a language that childred can easily understand. In this way, they begin to learn how art works.
Children can learn to interpretate the reality touching the art, but also they begin to learn the history of their town.
These workshops are dedicated to children, especially to students from 4-5 years old to High school.
All the handmade products will be the result of an hard work of research and knowledge. Everyone brings home his own product.
